Capital mobility and monetary policy: an overview
Abstract
This paper takes a look into the 15th Conference of the Central Bank of Chile, entitled “Capital Mobility and Monetary Policy.” Taken together, the studies presented there deal with various aspects of the causes, consequences and policy challenges related with the boom-bust cycles that have characterized market economies, particularly in Latin America, throughout most of their history. The works take an open economy approach and connect the cycle of prosperity-recession-depression with international capital flows and their impact on both domestic and external indebtedness, fluctuations of the currency and the banking sector. They also explore connections with global factors such as interest rates, commodity prices and crises or shocks across borders.
